Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park

Dallas Heritage Village is a place where you can go and learn all about the rich history of Dallas, Texas. It is located between downtown Dallas and the Arts District. "There are many things to do in Dallas, Texas," said Darcy W. Smith, Dallas' director of development. "The Arts District is filled with world-class venues, museums, specialty shops, specialty restaurants, boutique hotels, historical landmarks, and much more. Dallas Heritage Village fills the need for homeowners in downtown Dallas to have a place to live and a place to enjoy living, with great neighbors, convenient amenities, and affordable prices."

Dallas Heritage Village is located at Old Town Park in Dallas, Texas. "We use our collections of historical buildings, artifacts, collectibles, and artistic fixtures to bring to life, Dallas's rich history while providing a glimpse into the future," says Smith. "We are delighted to be a part of the preservation efforts of the city of Dallas and all of the work being done to preserve our beautiful heritage buildings."

"The museum is one of the highlights for everyone," said Patricie J. Smith, another member of the group. "The museum allows you to experience the richness of this early history while taking in some of the sights that make Dallas beautiful such as the round white shell house. I also love the walking paths along Lady Bird Johnson Park and walking through the Presidio," she said. "It gives a feeling of being a part of the past while enjoying the present." Smith and her wife, Patricie, had a tour guide when they visited Old Town Park. The guide was enthusiastic about preserving this treasured piece of Dallas's history.

Old Town is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Dallas with many historic buildings. "I am very happy to see the city parks preserve our great park for future generations," said Smith. "I am very proud to be a part of preserving our parks and preserving this great park for all to enjoy," said Millerman, who is also passionate about preserving Dallas' rich culture. "I want people to realize that preserving is part of the Dallas culture and that we are doing something positive to maintain our parks for our children and future generations."

Smith and Millerman have taken an interest in preserving historic buildings that are a part of Dallas' rich history. In fact, they started their project with the restoration of the historic landmark Cottage Garden. "We restored this historic plantation house and its gardens to the original designs and the charm it had prior to its demolition in 2001," said Smith. "We decided to bring this garden back as a museum because we knew that there were going to be people that would truly appreciate the design." They succeeded and not only were they able to restore the garden to its original beauty but they also preserved other important pieces from the original building such as the Galt House and the John Hancock Building.

The two men realized that if they preserved these buildings they would be able to continue to showcase them and help to create a living history for future generations to enjoy. "We want to create a community park in the heart of Dallas that visitors can enjoy," said Smith. "We have decided that in order to keep Dallas' rich old city history and heritage we need to have as many buildings as possible brought back to their original appearance because if we don't, then we are losing a very important part of Dallas rich history."

"It is very exciting to be able to bring this collection of buildings back to their original grandeur and to showcase them for future generations to enjoy," said Smith. "I don't know of a better way to showcase Dallas' rich heritage as it can only come back once these buildings are put back to their original grandeur." Other structures that will be restored include the Texas Woman's Jail and the old Bank of the West. Each structure will be placed within the park and visitors will be able to take tours of the buildings, which are located within the Old Town Square historic district.

In addition to preserving the original architectural styles of these buildings, Dallas Heritage Village will also be preserving the history of the city by displaying some of the most important pieces of the past. For example, the Dallas Historic District was designed to showcase the rich history and architecture that has become part of Dallas. In the center of the district is the Dallas Opera House which is the oldest operating opera in Texas. In addition to the buildings and attractions, the park also offers a large park with an auditorium as well as playgrounds, bike paths, picnic areas, and river banks for your pleasure. Smith added, "This project is just another step in what we're doing to reinvent the park. We want it to really shine."
