White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas USA
White Rock Lake lies in southwest Dallas, Texas, about ten miles from downtown. It is one of Dallas' most popular outdoor attractions. This lake is an artificially created body of water that is drained to the Trinity River and the surrounding lakes and streams. White Rock Lake, located in Dallas, Texas, is the second-largest lake in Dallas, after Lake Clark.
White Rock Lake has two lakes, each with its own unique features. At one end of the lake, you will find Lake Wylie, where fishing is abundant year-round. Fishing can be done on either flat or sandy areas in the lake. At this end of the lake, a staff photographer will take photographs while you fish. Some areas of the lake will also have boat launches for small pleasure crafts.
Another popular area of the lake is the Fish House Park, which is on the opposite end of the lake. Here you will find the catch-and-release fishing piers that are the main component of the park's seasonal calendar. At some times the west shoreline of the lake is blocked off by a row of high fences topped with mesh, making access to the west shore much more difficult. The north shoreline remains open to visitors.
Another unique feature of this lake is the Fish House Park itself. Located on the property, there are three marinas that serve as stations for charter boats and flats that offer fishing piers. Many of the boats are operated by the lake's concessionaire, Cabela's. At one end of the marina, the restrooms, bathhouse, pavilion, and lake play structure are located.
If you don't own a boat, or if you would rather not use one while visiting this unique piece of Dallas's downtown east side, you can take a bicycle tour along the Lake's banks. There are numerous paths along the banks, giving you a chance to see the beautiful scenery that frames the surrounding hills. However, it is recommended that you be accompanied by a family member, or at least a friend, in order to avoid missing any white rock crickets that may be attracted to your camera. The lakeshore is also an ideal place to visit, with a playground of sorts that allows kids to run and jump.
An out-of-town Dallas sports fan has many attractions to choose from when visiting the White Rock Lake area. Dallas' premier family entertainment and recreation complex is Fort Apache Park, which is conveniently located less than a mile away from the Lake. This Park hosts year-round family fun and activities, with tennis, swimming, boating, riding, and much more. Fort Apache features a clubhouse, a modern pool, and several picnic areas. No matter what your interests, there's something for everyone at Fort Apache Park.
A relatively new park, but already becoming one of Dallas' most popular attractions, is the Deep Pool at White Rock Lake. It offers visitors a view of Lake Travis, as well as White Rock Lake, all within walking distance. The Deep Pool was built in 1998 and serves as the centerpiece of a new five-mile-long park called The Porch and Bistro. The white picket-style buildings lining the perimeter of The Porch and Bistro represent several historic landmarks that remain in the historical background of The Porch and Bistro: The U.S. Post Office, The Great Fire, and The Old Post Office building. No matter what time of year you visit The Deep Pool, the water will be crystal clear and inviting as you enjoy swimming, fishing, and walking on the gently sloped lake bottom.
