The John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza in Dallas, Texas is a beautiful addition to any downtown area. Since its dedication, the plaza has enjoyed the patronage of countless visitors as well as local residents. In keeping with its namesake, the park is situated on a plot of land owned by the City of Dallas. Despite being named after a famous president, the plaza is open to visitors who wish to pay their respects to the many dignitaries who met both in the past and today. While many Dallas residents may know of the beloved former president, few can deny the profound effect that his term had upon Dallas.
In 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated near the Trinity River in Dallas, Texas. After the tragic event, Dallas was in the midst of planning to build a magnificent new park. Although the city originally intended to build a public park on the proposed site of the plaza, they were unable to do so due to financial constraints. Instead, they turned their attention towards a unique memorial structure that would honor the many who lost their lives during the infamous Dallas assassination.
Legend has it that a stone statue of John F. Kennedy was initially atop the monument. However, after the former president's death, a dispute arose between the government and the family over possession of the property. Subsequently, construction began on a full-scale renovation project to replace the monument. In order to facilitate the construction, work began on the new facility at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza. Work crews constructed the new facility on the south end of the Plaza. When the new facility was completed, it contained a museum as well as an interpretive center, an outdoor cafe, as well as seating and dining options for park visitors.
Due to the monumental efforts that went into the construction of the memorial plaza, the plaza quickly became a favorite gathering place for locals, tourists, and visitors alike. In fact, the popularity of the park and the surrounding area rapidly increased as the years progressed. Consequently, in addition to the planned construction of a new museum and interpretive center, the City of Dallas was required to purchase and dedicate a granite monument known as the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza and Park to the former president.
The John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza is located south of Dealey Plaza downtown. It contains a total of eight columns, which weigh approximately one ton each. Each column consists of one and a half tons of granite. The granite is primarily red in color but has been known to be white or blue. There are also smaller plaques within the memorial plaza. These smaller plaques contain information regarding the life of John F. Kennedy, including the times he served as president of the United States as well as his term as attorney general.
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra also uses the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza to display musical scores from their concerts as well as to honor the late leader. A famous quotation by John F. Kennedy, " PT Just paid the price for our freedom - we should never forget it." is also displayed on the plaza. The quotation was created by Dallas native Williamrough Brandreth.
The memorial, however, serves another purpose, that of recalling and remembering the many accomplishments and contributions John F. Kennedy made to the United States of America and to the world as a whole. Because the plaza already exists as a vacant field that can be filled with soil and other materials whenever necessary, the government decided to fill in the area with a concrete memorial rather than an ornamental stone monument. The decision was made to have a permanent monument to the famous leader in place so that the many people who visited the area could always view this very important landmark.
As the most noted and honored amongst the many natural wonders of the earth, the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza is quite simply, yet very thoughtful and charming in its design and implementation. A sculpture of the former president is certainly not only a welcome sight at any public area, but is also a thoughtful and unforgettable addition to the memorial. The concrete is an incredible material that will last a very long time and is an accurate depiction of many of John F. Kennedy's many achievements and contributions to the world.
